Health Canada Suspends Digital Motion X-Ray System

Health Canada’s Therapeutic Product Directorate announced March 14th that it has suspended the licence for the Digital Motion X-ray system, manufactured by DMX-Works Inc., because they say “it presents significant safety risks to patients and users”.

    I find it ironic that the use of this incredibly beneficial diagnostic tool is now prohibited in Canada while the increasing use of CT scans continues unquestioned.
    Physicists have concluded that 30 seconds full exposure on the DMX is equivalent to 1/10 of a standard bite wing x-ray. A chest CT is the equivalent of 400 standard chest x-rays.
    If a DMX study is 5 mins in total, then the maximum exposure would be the same as a single dental x-ray, Anything of less time would therefore be less that that. It is true that the precise amount of this very low level of ionizing radiation is difficult to precisely gauge, but to claim that it therefore represents a risk to operators, physicians and patient is patently absurd. The decision of the Canadian federal government is not based on safety considerations, but on which professionals would be using it the most. The politics of health care Canadian style.
